Permaculture Starter Pack

The Permaculture Starter Pack consists of a concept sketch, sketch with grid overlay, plus a separate implementation report which explains the relevant permacuture ideas and how to implement your design in an easy to follow format.

The concept sketch is fully to-scale, and based on aerial footage of your property sourced from ACTmapi (or Sixmaps and Google if you are in NSW). If you have a surveyor's plan of your site then this will be used as the base drawing. The design itself is meticulously hand-drawn and coloured. Labels are hand written; annotations are typed. The design is sent to you within your Starter Pack report and also as a separate .jpeg; .png or .pdf extension file so you can print it out at whatever size you like. For sloping sites, contour lines (when available) are marked.

Please see some examples below.
What do I get?
  • 2 hours in-person consultation time to discuss ideas and your garden's potential
  • Follow up email for your input, confirming details of design job and elements to include in the design
  • To-scale concept sketch outlining placement of major trees and shrubs, water harvesting, pathways, lawn, structures (e.g. decking, seating, chicken run etc.)
  • Grid overlay* to help you measure distances
  • Tree layer diagram (where applicable) showing extent of overstorey trees
  • 15-20 page report explaining key permaculture ideas and how to implement your design
  • At completion, your Starter Pack and a high resolution version of your concept sketch will be delivered to you via email

Does the concept sketch provide detailed planting lists?
No. The concept sketch itemises major trees and shrubs, lawns, water harvesting, paths and other structures, and shows the size of garden borders. The purpose of a concept sketch is to identify the general layout and not every detail. However, we list a range of suggested plants on your sketch that should work in specific borders and areas throughout your garden, This allows flexibility in selecting your preference/working with what's available. A higher level of plant detail is provided in the Master Plan.

What size is the design? Can I print it at home and still use the measurements?
We recommend printing at A3 size for best visibility, but you can choose. We provide your design with a 1 square metre grid overlay so you can print it at whatever size you want. To work out distances, all you need to do is count the number of squares from one location to another. (For very small areas where increased accuracy is needed we can provide a grid that shows every 10cm). To learn more about our approach to scaling please scroll to the bottom of the page.
What does it cost?
$1650 urban (Canberra and Queanbeyan)
$1850 nearby rural* (Hall, Sutton, Gundaroo, Murrumbateman, Bungendore, Michelago etc.)

Costs for rural properties reflect the greater complexity of rural properties, and/or the longer preparation and travel times involved.

What if I need help implementing my design?
We are sorry but we do not provide landscaping services. However, Cally is more than happy to come out and provide supervision and guidance to you or your landscaper for specific jobs, for example, digging swales and French drains to get the levels right. This service is $80 per hour, plus travel time.

Additional note on scaling: why we don't usually use standard builder's scales.
After a couple of years trying to work with standard builders scales (1:100; 1:250 etc.) we stopped using them and replaced them with our current grid system. This was because we needed an alternative that was useful for most people. While builder's scales are useful in architecture, they tend to be quite impractical for printing out standard garden sizes which are a lot larger than a standard dwelling!
We found that:
  • Standard builder's scales used for suburban blocks do not fit comfortably on A4 and A3 printouts which are the usual sizes for home printers. For example 1:100 [1cm=1m] is too large for a standard suburban block to be printed even at A3, while 1:200 or 1:250 prints so small that it's hard to see the details.
  • Builder's scales of anything other than 1:100 need a specialised ruler that most people don't have.
  • Many printers make slight adjustments to margins, meaning that the required scale of a document may not be perfectly replicated on every printout, even if the right paper is selected.
Because gardens do not require the milimetre-level accuracy that architecture needs it was possible to devise a practical alternative that is intuitive, easy, and works very well for the home gardener or landholder - a grid overlay layer!

Should you need to 'marry up' a design with some architectural drawings that use a builder's scale we can easily provide your drawing as a .png with the background removed, meaning it can be added as a layer to another professional's drawing.
