Permaculture Master Plan

The Permaculture Master plan provides you with a quality to-scale design with a higher level of detail than the concept sketch. The design comes with a pack that includes zone and site analyses of your property, detailed water harvesting plan, grid overlay to help with measuring things out, plant suggestions, and a comprehensive report full of permaculture knowledge relevant to you and your garden. It's not just about the 'what' and 'how', but also the permaculture 'why' of your design.

In addition, the Master Plan gives you an opportunity to review and provide feedback on a draft of your design before it is finalised.

If you want to gain a deeper understanding of the systems thinking that underpins permaculture, want to be more involed in the design process, or if you need a quality landscape design that puts working with nature at its core, the Permaculture Master Plan could be just what you need.

See below for some examples
What do I get?
  • 2 hours on-site consultation time to discuss your needs and your property's potential
  • Follow up email for your input, confirming details of design job and elements to include in the design
  • Zone analysis of your garden/property showing areas that are more and less frequently visited
  • Site analysis, showing water flows, wind direction, areas of shade and sun exposure and other relevant considerations for your design
  • Initial concept sketch for your feedback.
  • Quality to-scale design with trees and shrubs labelled, water harvesting, pathways, lawn, structures (e.g. decking, seating, chicken run etc.) (Note: suggestions are provided for small plants & groundcovers in relevant areas giving you some flexibility and choice in smaller plants. If you require all plants to be identified and labelled on a design, please check out Option 3 below)
  • Design overlaid with grid to help with measuring out distances
  • Comprehensive report explaining your design and permaculture ideas
  • Water harvesting plan showing details of where to dig channels and basins, divert downpipes, grey water or tank overflows. ($450 discount if not needed)
  • At completion, your Master Plan and a separate high resolution copy of your design will be delivered to you via email

Does the Master Plan design provide detailed planting lists?
While the Master Plan design does contain a higher level of plant detail than the concept sketch, not every plant is itemised. All trees and major shrubs, plus smaller shrubs are identified where specific species are recommended. In borders with a range of smaller plants suggested species are listed either in the design or explained in the Master Plan report. In permaculture we look at plants from the point of view of their function and relationships in the garden, rather a species-first approach. It's a process of designing in the larger patterns first (e.g. considering type of shade needed in a particular location) rather than the details (the specific plants). Often a range of plants will serve similar functions and in these cases a list of suitable plants will be provided to give you more flexibility when sourcing.

What size is the design? Can I print it at home and still use the measurements?
We recommend printing at A3 size for best visibility, but you can choose. We provide your design with a 1 square metre grid overlay so you can print it at whatever size you want. To work out distances, all you need to do is count the number of squares from one location to another. (For very small areas where increased accuracy is needed we can provide a grid that shows every 10cm). To learn more about our approach to scaling please scroll to the bottom of the page.

What does it cost?
$3500 urban (Canberra and Queanbeyan)
$3750 rural (Hall, Sutton, Gundaroo, Murrumbateman, Bungendore, Michelago, Tarago, Carwoola, Googong etc.) Note: If your property is more than 1 hour's drive from Canberra please contact us for individual pricing.

Note: $450 discount if water plan not needed

Costs for rural properties reflect the greater complexity of rural properties, and/or the longer preparation and travel times involved.

Additional note on scaling: why we don't usually use standard builder's scales.
After a couple of years trying to work with standard builders scales (1:100; 1:250 etc.) we stopped using them and replaced them with our current grid system. This was because we needed an alternative that was useful for most people. While builder's scales are useful in architecture, they tend to be quite impractical for printing out standard garden sizes which are a lot larger than a standard dwelling!
We found that:
  • Standard builder's scales used for suburban blocks do not fit comfortably on A4 and A3 printouts which are the usual sizes for home printers. For example 1:100 [1cm=1m] is too large for a standard suburban block to be printed even at A3, while 1:200 or 1:250 prints so small that it's hard to see the details.
  • Builder's scales of anything other than 1:100 need a specialised ruler that most people don't have.
  • Many printers make slight adjustments to margins, meaning that the required scale of a document may not be perfectly replicated on every printout, even if the right paper is selected.
Because gardens do not require the milimetre-level accuracy that architecture needs it was possible to devise a practical grid alternative that is intuitive, easy, and works very well for the home gardener or landholder.

Should you need to 'marry up' a design with some architectural drawings that use a builder's scale we can easily provide your drawing as a .png with the background removed, meaning it can be added as a layer to another professional's drawing.
