Garden consultation
Maybe you would like chickens but are not really sure where to put them or how to integrate them with what you already have. Or maybe you're wondering if it's possible to grow vegetables without spending endless summer evenings watering them?
Maybe, after a crazy summer of drought, heat, smoke, nearby fires, and now a pandemic, you are wondering if there is anything you can do in the short term in your home and garden to boost your resilience and get at least some home-grown food over the coming months. Fear not - we can help with this too!
We start by discussing your ideas and aims and then walk around your garden with the video on showing me all the aspects and elements in your yard. For a good-sized suburban block this will probably take between 1 and 2 hours. We discuss your needs and any ideas you already have for your garden. This includes consideration of how all members of your household use the garden (even pets!), and how your future garden could best cater to everyone's needs. If you're looking for some things you can do immediately to boost your resilience over the next few months we can of course also explore that too.
Our discussion will also include some site analysis, such as looking at where the sun does and doesn't shine in your garden, water flows through your property and the characteristics of your soil. In permaculture, we always try to work with nature and natural patterns, because doing so makes things so much easier in the long term!
I am particularly excited about reducing the need for watering, so am always looking for ways to help my clients capture and store rainwater in ways that increase a garden's resilience in heatwaves.
Service summary:
Prices:
Within Canberra: $250 weekdays / $300 weekends
Nearby rural (within an hour of Canberra): $350 weekdays / $400 weekends.
OR: Save money and petrol and book a virtual consultation instead for only $195 - urban or rural!
While social distancing was in place to limit the spread of Covid-19 we offered our garden consults virtually, via video call. These were quite successful so I have decided to continue to offer this option for anyone who wants it (and it saves us petrol too).
The virtual consultation is basically just the same as an in-person consult, except that I will be there via video-link in your phone!
Currently, for video-calls I am set up with:
Optional extra 1: tailored report
Because there is so much information in permaculture, it can be hard to digest it all in one go. A report to summarise what we discussed and your next steps can be really helpful to many people. In the day or two following the consultation, I will send you a 5 - 7 page report by email.
Optional extra 2: placement sketch of where things can be located in your garden
If you need help visualising where things could be laid out but don't want the expense of an intermediate or detailed garden design, then a 'mud map' layout of where elements could go might be just what you need. This is a high level diagram showing placement of elements (e.g. food forest, chicken zone, veggie patch etc.) overlaid on an aerial map.
Next steps
Services can build directly on one another. For example, if you decide after a consultation you would like to 'upgrade' to an intermediate or more detailed design, what you have already paid for the consultation is of course counted towards your total design fee. We aim to keep prices as reasonable as possible while ensuring you get high quality, tailored advice and relevant materials.
